SB-230 problems

My SB-230 likes to blow the grid fuse and the zener diode when it's just
sitting in standby. I replaced the original 1.5-amp zener with a 15-amp
unit, and now it just blows the grid fuse. It appears to me that the only
way the grid circuit could draw that much current when the SB-230 is in
"exciter only" mode is if there were an internal short in the 8873 and that,
therefore, I'd better spring for a new jug. Does this sound right to you
guys/gals? I'd like to get some other suggestions or input before I hock
the family jewels (no, not _those_ family jewels!). Thanks for any help.
Bill Crowell, N6AYJ
