hw16's, et al....true tranceive?

Just glancing at the Ham Radio article, it doesn't seem to be a simple
mod. There appears to be 3 transistors added along with some voltage
regulation. The mod also adds RIT. There's a picture of a small toggle
switch added to the front panel as well as a pot. So there's 2 holes in
the front panel. Being the lazy kind, I'd simply add an HG-10 VFO as
Heath intended and be done with it.
