IO-18 scope

Hi,
I just joined this list, and am sending this mail right off as I
would like to get started this weekend. I have a Heathkit IO-18 scope
that's in rough shape, and I need some help figuring out how to go about
initially trying it out. It looks like it might have been exposted to
either a little weather, or at least some condensation, as there is a
little surface rust on the transformer (and a couple other small spots) as
well as a little currosion starting on the case inside. Maybe you can
tell me if my initial plan sounds reasonable or not. For starters, I
think if the transformer or CRT were to end up being dead, there is
probably little point for me to keep going. I don't own a varriac (sp?)
but I've heard of a trick of using a light bulb in series to drop voltage,
would this be a good way to check out the transformer for shorts? I was
thinking it might be worth replacing some or all of the caps just to be
safe, does sound reasonable? I'm concerned that I might run the risk or
frying something otherwise, and I would have a tough time finding
replacement tubes. Does anyone know where I might find a schematic or any
info about this scope? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

        Dan
