SB-220 Hard Grease

I just opened up a SB-220 intending to restore it and found a large amount of hard, off-white waxy material surrounding the 9 microHenry RF choke.  Should this material (? Hard Grease) be removed?  If so, how?  Where does it come from?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
