temperature sensors

I should have been more specific. You can get fairly linear results with
silicon diodes but only over a relatively narrow temperature range. If
all you want to do is measure outdoor and/or indoor temperatures, then
no biggie. The problem occurs when you attempt to read temperature
ranges beyond let's say 0 to 100 degrees F. Most of the stuff I used to
"play" with went from -20 to + 400 degrees F with required accuracy
which would be overkill for home use. But that's when microprocessors
were still in infancy and Heathkit was still selling kits. The good old
days!
