HW-101 VFO Frequency Shifts

My HW-101 has developed a rapid frequency shift of a few hundred cycles,
then back, every once in a while.  It does not seem heat related and the
VFO is definately changing frequency.  The reduction drive retaining bolts
are secure and the reduction drives seem OK.  I'd like to remove the VFO
subassembly for examination and cleaning the variable cap contacts but a
bundle of wires makes access to two nuts/washers just about impossible.  Is
there a trick to loosening these?
