PK-232 Heath???

HK-232 was first generation = PK-232.

They kept pace with ROM updates until Heath did their own version of the
mailbox board and decided the extra unused IC outline was not needed along
with some other address lines. The next AEA update used a 1 MB ROM and the
Heath MBX board didn't have enough address lines.

I kluged a hideous piggyback ROM mod, soldering two ROM's on top of each
other (parallel pins. kinda like mating frogs...sorry for the crude analogy,
but a picture's worth a thousand words) except for chip select and a couple
address lines. It did work, and was not for the faint of heart or eyesight.
It was more of an oddity than an official mod, and the big layoffs came
shortly thereafter, so I don't know what happened to that info.

When AEA started doing factory mods for modem speed increases, and I think
code changes for an outboard modem, the equivalence between the HK and
PK-232 were no more. And, AEA wouldn't do factory mods on the Heath version,
for legitimate reasons.

So, I'd be careful about investing in a field upgrade to an HK-232 unless
they (Timewave) know which versions their upgrade would work with, because
there may be numerous differences. And if it's a factory upgrade, they would
really be sticking out
their necks to work on a customer built unit...we all know how many
variables there are there.
