Mike,
Remove the 200 ohm balance pot and measure its resistance both end to end
and center-tap to ends. I'll bet that at least one of the connections is
open. I've replaced at least 4 of them in -401's and -101's. I tore
apart a couple of removed pots and found that the rivet that supposed to
connect the resistive element wasn't.
The replacement I've used is a 10-turn trimpot with the screw out the
top. You can get them from Digikey for less than $2. The wire leads are
usually closer than the old pot but you can bend the leads to fit the
original holes. It doesn't seem to make a difference whether the trimpot
is wirewound or cermet. While you are there, also replace the 240 ohm end
resistors. I have found them way off and drifty with temperature. With
the trimpot, it's easy to balance the carrier down to zero.
Try it -- you'll like it.
