Regarding 1N270 Germanium carrier diodes in the balanced modulator:.
Its a good idea to get at least 1 dozen and match the closest 4, Heath
originally pagkaged them in specially matched sets of 4.

I have experienced supirer carrier supression and stability when used in
combonation with a 10 turn balence pot with this method
