SB-102 Receive quality

I recently powered up the SB-102 transceiver I bought at Dayton last
year (!) and discovered that it worked well except for one relatively
minor problem. When I receive loud signals the audio is slightly
distorted. It doesn't have that incredible tonal quality you expect with
Heath and with tube gear. It's almost as though the AGC was not working.
Can anyone through out some ideas so a relatively simple mechanic to
check through.
