In agreement with Bob's well-written explanation, I suggest customers take
items to a reputable third party shipper who can assure you of their
approved packaging/shipping status with the carrier in question, declare a
value you can substantiate, and have them package it for you. I don't often
want to pay anyone to pack my stuff, but my "real job" involves large pieces
of glass and when customers want to ship with confidence, this is the only
way to go...it is pricey, but usually the item is worth substantially more
than the packaging and shipping.
