I guess Heath test gear chassis were done in a raw, uncoated aluminim as,over a period of time, they accumulate the most God awful looking oily fingerprints and powdery white crud that will flake off if you brush it.

Mineral spirits paint thinner and a piece of steel wool(I shield the components with pieces of paper towel to keep the wool fibers away from switch contacts, etc) does a great job of removing the oils and crud,or you can use automotive compounds and polishes,or plastic polish or Brasso to accomplish the same end result.Any mild, cleansing abrasive,in other words.

I finish the job by applying Vaseline, then removing most of it with a piece of paper towel. This leaves a thin, protective coating which keeps the chassis crud free for at least a year in my experience.

In mild cases of crud invasion,,just the Vaseline alone, briskly rubbed into the chassis does the job, with no abrasive being necessary.
