Flimsy cabinet design

Given that most Heathkits performed very well, why was the decision made to go with flimsy front panels, and thin cabinets and very soft aluminum chassis in the test gear?
Comparing the Heath test gear to Eico's battleship inspired construction,Eico comes out way ahead.Same can be said of deep etched front panels as opposed to screen printed jobs.
I had a Heath scope in which the power tranny simply bent the hell out of the chassis due to poor physical design, and I have to support the front panel of my IM-13 with one hand while removing the phone plug because that panel is so flimsy. Also had an early Heath solid state power supply with the same chassis warp problem as the scope.
I am asuming it was decided to cut cost physically to balance the enormous new kit development costs that Heath must have had compared to Eico, whose policy was to keep the same kit in the line for a thousand years before making a change.
