Indeed.

Sounds like the original builder didn't heed the "In Case of Difficulty"
section that was in every manual:

1. Recheck the wiring. Trace each lead...
2. About 90% of the kits that returned for repair do not function properly
due to poor connections and soldering..."
...

Sigh.
