MOV's are cheap and I put them in all my stuff.Even ones with a 16VDC trigger point to protect 12V rigs.

There is also GAS tube suppressors and act faster
to surges than MOV's.
I use them also,

There is also a TRANSIENT Voltage Suppressors
which is 2 zenners back to back But can take a spike
that a normal zenner can not.
Thay work great also.

The best thing you can do with your gear is to put a FUSE on the 120V/240V /12VDC line.

When surge protectors trigger ,A high current surge will be there taking out the FUSE and saving your rig!!

Doen't count on you 15A/20A circuit to trip.A rig with a 5A transformer will fry at 15A.

Your best friend is a FUSE! ratied just above what your rig draws!!
