RE EL34 tubes

Has anyone had any experience exchanging the EL34 with a 6L6? Appears
the base pinout is close enough assuming the EL34 circuit has the
suppressor and cathode tied together, and ratings on the two tubes are
fairly close except for different grid currents and biasing levels. I
have an Eico plate modulator (so fidelity is not a REALLY big concern)
which uses the EL34s, and being able to swap for the 6L6s makes sense
for everyday operation if it works OK. Comments?
