Heath AM transmitter

Would like to do a little work on AM.  I have a fine SB 301 receiver but will need an AM transmitter to get out.  Am not interested in investing a lot of money but would like fine TX unit to use.  Would like to know how well my SB 301 should do as a receiver?  What TX unit would be good to use?  Appreciate any help I can muster.
