Beginner seeking help with SB-101

Hello to all on the list.

I was given an SB-101 by a friend. He bought it from the builder many
years ago, and only used it briefly before deciding that he was going to
buy a brand-new Kenwood HF rig. As such, he hasn't been able to help me
to learn a great deal about the rig and its operation. I am hoping that
the group on this list might be able to help me.

I would say that the rig is in quite good shape overall. It was built
by a ham with a very good reputation, and has been well taken care of,
even during its many years of storage. When I received it, I cleaned it
carefully, hooked it up to a G5RV and started using it to copy code from
W1AW in preparation for my code test.

In anticipation of upgrading my licence, I purchased an antenna tuner
with a dummy load built in, and began to study the transmitting side of
the operating instructions.

Step 5 of the "Initial Tune Up" instructions says to set the mode switch
to tune, and the plate meter should read 50 ma. The rig reads 100 ma
with the meter switch in the plate position.

Please excuse my ignorance if you can, but what is the significance of
this? Does this reading point to a problem with a specific circuit or
tube? Should I have the rig looked at before I try to use it further?

Any advice and/or explanation would be most appreciated.

Regards,

Terry Noble
