PEM nuts are one suggestion, if one has the tools and or knows how to
install them, and where to get them. It may be easier for people in
industries that use them to do this.

One thing we used to do at Heath (I had forgotten all about this until your
question came up) was to lay the sheet metal over a block of wood (i.e.,
2x4) and tap the hole with a small ball peen hammer. This would roll the
self-tapped metal threads back into the hole, and work  the metal such that
the hole was slightly smaller. This sometimes allowed the screw to re-bite
better.
