1). I would put the unit with the higher power rating first.
OR
2). If both units have adequate power margin.
If your worried about the isolation on the variac;
I would put the variac second. PROVIDING the input of the
isolation transformer is fused. With a rating that will
protect all items should a short occur.

Anyway do not touch the case of the variac!

Hello to all,
Haven't turned on my old Heath station for 5 years.  I'm in the process
of
building a variable AC power supply with isolation transformer to bring
it
up slowly.  I have acquired a GE Volt-Pac (variable transformer), Model
9T92A1, but I'm concerned about the insulator between the winding and
the
grounded steel "panel" at the front of the winding. The "panel" is
attached
to the control shaft mounting bushing.  The insulator may be fiberglass,
but its very thin, and apparently a single layer.  Any comments?

Also, I can think of several reasons pro and con for placing the
isolation
transformer ahead of, or after, the variac.   Anyone know how this is
usually done in commercial units?
