Do crystals stop working?

Like another post, my SB-102 goes deaf.  It is intermittent on 20.  Sometimes
when I turn it on, 20 works fine but other times it comes on dead leaving me
to believe this is not a bandswitch problem.  When it happens, there are no
signals and the preselector makes no difference -- just white noise, and no
transmission.  S meter operates normally,  I can hear a rushing noise on my
other receiver when I try to transmit but there is no signal where it is
supposed to be.

Ideas?
