Well, while you're laughing, some enterprising person is probably
designing and building a fancy X-Ray machine expressly for such
collectors, so they can view and enjoy looking at all the components
of their factory-sealed, unassembled Heathkits. ;-)
I'm not about to get into collecting Heathkits, but there is
something fascinating to human beings about unrealized (or not-yet
realized) potential. An unassembled Heathkit has a potential for
perfection. A built kit is flawed. Ponder the DX contacts an
unassembled DX-100 might have made (there's a good chance the builder
would have been dead by now, anyway).
Unassembled Heathkits are time capsules. Are they worth what people
pay for them? Probably not, but then again neither were a lot of tech
stocks that sold for highly inflated prices a short time ago.
I think that by and large, everyone is getting a kick out of this.
People with more money than they know what to do with get a rush when
they're able to beat out other bidders and win the unassembled prize.
I'm also quite certain that rest of you guys are getting secret
pleasure out of scoffing at the high bidders.
