Martin, the answer is a qualified "yes." What is meant will be evident from the comparative specifications
for the two tubes, given below:
3-500Z 3-400Z
Plate Dissipation: 500 watts 400 watts
Max Plate Voltage 4 KV 3 KV
Max Plate Current 400 ma. 370 ma.
Max Frequency, full output: 160- mHz 110 mHz
Amplification Factor: 160 200
Input Capacitance: 7.4 Pf. 7.4 Pf.
Plate-to-Grid Capacitance: 4.1 Pf. 4.1 Pf.
Output capacitance: 0.07 Pf 0.07 Pf
Fil voltage & current: 5V @ 14.5A 5V @ 14.5A
TYPICAL CLASS B GROUNDED GRID OPERATING PARAMETERS;
Plate voltage: 3KV 3Kv
Plate current: 370 ma. 100/333 (voice)
Grid voltage: 0 0
Grid current: 115 ma. 120 ma.
Driving power (single tube): 30 watts 32 watts
Power Output: 750 watts 655
I know several hams who have replaced their 3-500Zs in rigs like the SB-200 and similar rigs where the plate
voltage does not run over 3KV and have had no problems. The 3-400Z is a good bit cheaper than the 3-500Z,
also. Furthermore, the difference between 750 watts out per tube and 655 watts out can't be detected on the
other end.
Hope this is of help.
