General Coverage Receiver Question (Tube).

In the mid 1970s, when I had my original Heath SB-301
/ SB-401 combination I bought my first Collins S-Line
receiver, a 75S3A. I ran it in parallel with my
SB-301 for several weeks to see how they compared.
Eight to nine times out of ten the Heath would do what
the Collins could do. It was that tenth time that
persuaded me to get the matching 32S3 transmitter. I
actually got a 73S3 and 32S3 for what I was willing to
pay for a 32S3. I eventually got rid of my Heath
"twins". Then, I acquired a 75S1 and 32S1 to go along
with my 75S3A and 32S3. Traded off the 75S3 for a
75A4 about two years ago.
About a year ago, I acquired another SB-301 / SB-401
combination. The SB-301 is as good a receiver as the
75S1 and has a bit more audio output (the 75S1 is
notorious for marginal audio output). It also has the
advantage of 500 KHz per bandswitch position versus
the 200 KHz of the 75S1/75S2/75S3 series. However, it
still only does from 80 to 90 percent of what the
75S3A will do. But, looking at the cost, it is well
worth the money.
I definitely like the SB-301 much better than the
Drake R-4 series which some people consider to be
close to Collins in performance. However, that is not
my opinion!

But when it comes to Heath, my all-time favourite is
the SB-301 ham band receiver (and, by default, I
guess, its SWL cousin).
Other than that, a poor man's Collins, for my $$$!
