HW-101 drive problem with coil cover installed

Yep, mine had the same problem. When the coil cover was removed, the coil
circuit would go into self-oscillation and the output would jump to full
output. When the coil cover was installed, then the output would reduce,
especially on 40 meters.

There are several Heath bulletins referencing grounding improvements in the
area of the tuning coils. One recommends removing the aluminum comb and
replacing it with a steel one which is then soldered to the shields.
Through
the fine folks of this list, I found my problem to actually be the tuning of
T1/L1? (The slug just left of the VFO) which was tuned to the wrong peak.
There may be more than one peak, but one is much larger and gives the full
RF output. Maybe yours is having the same problem???

Subject: HW-101 drive problem with coil cover installed

I have an interesting problem I would like to get the advice of the list on.
A HW-101 I am restoring has developed (not sure what or how) an interesting
problem. I get full output on all bands until I put the coil cover on. I
have traced this to a sensitivity on the shield separating the drive grid
coils from the driver plate coils, specifically at the top of the shield
toward the inside of the rig. If I put a screwdriver in the comb groove
which the shield goes into (doing this makes the contact between the shield
and comb good), my output drops from around 100W out to only 10-20W. My
other rig has no sensitivity in this area. I have looked carefully at my
other HW-101 and made sure the grounding, etc... in that area on this rig is
the same and intact. I am thinking it is something in the 6CL6 driver, but
not sure what. Any ideas?
