I bought my 520 in '75 and it is still my main rig. What follows is the by the book method. Don't forget the dummy load

1. Set band switch to desired band
2. Set mode switch to tune
3. Set meter switch to ALC
4. Set Plate control to somewhere close to band switch setting
5. Move the Send /Rec switch to Send and adjust Drive control for max meter reading.
6. Set meter switch to IP
7. Again move Send/rec to Send and adjust Plate control for max DIP in plate current.
8. Set Mode switch to CW and Meter switch to RF.
9. If you have key plugged in be sure the VOX/MAN switch is in the VOX position.
10. Either use whatever provisions your key or keyer has for tuning or move the SEND/REC switch to SEND and alternately adjust the LOAD and PLATE control for max output on the meter. Note that the SEND/REC switch will not work if you have a key plugged in and the mode switch is set for CW.
11. Move the meter switch back to IP, key the xmtr and check that the plate current is 200ma.

This is Kenwood's method and it has worked well for me. I have never replaced the finals and I still qet 100 or so watts out.
