This is not a matter of debate or opinion any more than replacing the tires
on your family vehicle would be.
'Lytics dry out. They short. And when they go they sometimes take the power
transformer with them, not to mention rectifier tubes, reistors, and maybe the
choke for good measure.
You don't let them die first, and think about replacing them only after the
transformer begins to emit smoke. Not unless bungee jumping is your thing,or
you smoke three packs of cigarettes a day.or drive at 90 miles an hour as a
matter of course.
You repalce them as a common sense precautionary measure based on excellent
evidence for doing so,not just in the textbooks but in the real life
expereiences of countless set owners down through the years.
There are a number of restorers on the Antique Radio Forum with sad tales to
tell regarding set damage traced to popped caps.
You have every right to take such a risk, should you chose to do so.But it
would be a disservice to any newbie members of this list to let them think
that recapping is more of a luxury then a necessity.
That would a dangerously cavalier attitude and contrary to the best advice.
we have to offer and exchange for our mutual benefit.
My experiences regarding caps in old radios is quite different from yours.
Thanks,
Malcolm, Leonard
