You might try changing the 0A2 regulator to an 0B2
which will drop the screen voltage from 150 volts to
105 volts.  Even better is to put two 0B2 regulator
tubes in series (with equalization resistors across
each) and feed the plate of the 6AU6 from the 210
volts regulated and the screen from the 105 volts
regulated.

Also, try a 6AH6 tube (direct replacement).  Heath
went to the 6AH6 in the Apache instead of the 6AU6 of
the VF-1 / DX-100 series.  That helped as well.

Of course, you definitely have to let the VFO run
constantly when transmitting.
