Here's another perspective on the issue:

I've bought some unbuilt kits on ebay, some for what I would consider
exorbitant prices.

My motivation is to share the Heath "experience" with my kids some day.
Most (or at least a lot) of us had the luxury of learning the "hands on"
end of electronics with the help of the kits. I'd like to be able to
provide some of that access.

In an age where you need a microscope to see a resistor, these kits
provide a perspective the is effectively no longer available in "modern"
electronics, even if you are an engineer.
