HW-101 Audio scratchy

Hi Guys!
Having a problem with "scratchy audio" reports on my HW-101. I only put
about 100 hrs CW on it, before I updated to Tech (Oh, the lure of 2meter
phone privilages!) and put it away in storage for the last 27 years. It
still looks as nice as the day I finished building it in 1975 and the
receiver is 100% strong and still perfectly aligned! Amazing!
The problem I have is this: I picked up a D-104 w/ 9V pre-amp on QTH.com
that the owner said worked FB and wired it up for the "101". I worked a
good # of stations from 40-10m today but most folks said my audio was
very "understandable" but also very "scratchy". Should I look first at
the mic? Or is there something obvious in the audio circuit that
commonly fails after long periods of inactivity. I have very limited
test equipment but a fair supply of old tubes.
I welcome any and all suggestions. Thanks!
