Hyperactive HW-100

Thanks to several guys for suggestions on my weird HW-100. I did finally
get it neutralized, and it is behaving on the TUNE side of the switch. I
also did an alignment of the het osc, driver grid and plate, and all
those are right on target.. So on the TUNE function, it is good. The
problem on neut issue was that the red wire was not connected in the
back of the variable cap. That is a bit of a hidden place, and when I
finally looked, there it was out in the open unconnected. Also the
neutralizing white wire from the front var cap was of the wrong length
and sticking way too much underchassis - about 3/4 inch. So I put in the
right length wire and stuck 1/8 beneath as the book sez. So neutralizing
is now pretty good. I get about 80 or 90 watts into a dummy load on the
TUNE function, which is ok. And it is still receiving well.

But the weirds are still present when I go to PRESS TO TALK. When I push
PTT (with drive control fully CCW), immediately about 50 watts appear on
the dummy load. In the TUNE mode, changing slug on transformer T1 (per
book TX align) gives no change (but T1 tests good for continuity). I
cleaned the relay outside the dog house. re-soldered a bunch of pads on
the modulator board that carries T1, resoldered all connections on the
MIC/CW pot pair. No joy.

Someone earlier installed a small rectangular multi turn pot in place of
the standard Heath carrier null pot. Moving the adjustment screw on it
has no effect on the 50 watts I get on PTT. Also the mic will not
modulate the 50 watts at any setting of the mic/cw pots. This small null
pot appears ok for ohms. Maybe its wiper isn’t swinging. So I will try a
replacement just to be sure. I pulled one of the ring diodes and it
tests good. Didn’t check the other 3.

Someone mentioned checking the ground lug on the MODE wafer switch
(tune, lsb, usb, cw) to see if it is shorting. I don’t see a ground lug
in the sense of a long lug, just the various smaller lugs on the wafers.

Could be there is a miswire. But before I start the more laborious
pulling of boards and controls and the front panel and donknowwhattall,
I thought I would ask the oracles if anyone has a more focused idea.

Some progress, and learned some good stuff. It’s fun.
