Gang:

The war goes slowly, however, today I managed to isolate and correct the problem with the birdie/spur on 15 meters.

Along with the HW-101 I got for a parts rig, included was an original manual AND a set of service bulletins!

Guess what? Heathkit Service Bulletin HW-101-83, dated Feb 8, 1985, addresses the very problem that I was having. The problem was that in the mid-70s Heathkit decided to do away with the sockets on V10 and V12 that had grounding pins in the center of the tube socket. Originally these were soldered directly to the shields that were placed between the Driver Grid and Plate boards on the bottom of the 101 chassis.

HW-101-83 lists the cure for the birdie/spur on 15 meters as running a ground wire or braid from the shield and soldering it directly to the ground on the tube sockets for V10 and 11. That cured the problem!

The only spin off of this was that the entire realignment of the HFO and Driver Grid and Plate boards had to be redone.

This trip down memory lane brought to you buy the fine folks at Heathkit and their wonderful service bulletins.
