 I use a laptop PC and the single conductor wire  from my  random wire antenna,  runs close to the lead-in for the telephone line.
Running 5 watts on HF will harm the PCMCIA (very tiny) modem....I have replaced at least 6 of them before finding the problem.....I now use a toroid wound with many turns of telephone wire in the line from the telephone wall outlet. I do this in case I forget to unplug the phone line from the modem when running a QRP gallon (5W)..
