Since 5 "S" units is 15 dB if the 3 dB per S-unit is
considered. That would be very easy to obtain with
any number of devices. However, all of the SB-Line
equipment that I have ever serviced has a basic
sensitivity greater than the noise floor of the bands
80 - 10 meters allows. Thus, more gain will usually
cause other problems like "front end overload",
intermodulation, AGC problems, etc.

The only use that I have found for such a circuit (or
a preamplifier) was on an SB-301 that I used to use to
work the 10 watt JA (Japan) stations on 40 meter CW.
I would use the CW (400 Hz) filter and turn on the
preamplifier. That effectively broadened out the 400
Hz filter so that it acted much like the normal SSB
filter. However, I was able to "dig out" the low
powered CW signals. But, if anyone came on anywhere
near the frequency that I was working, the receiver
would become virtually useless until I turned off the
preamplifier. However, this was on winter nights,
just before dawn when the noise level was at a minimum
on 40.
