Heath Cantenna problems

I own a Cantenna and had a problem I have not heard about from anyone
else. One day it suddenly became an open circuit. My first thought was
that the resistor had failed, but when I opened the can and began
troubleshooting I quickly determined that the resistive element was OK.
The problem was that the aluminum clamp which attaches to the lower end
of the element had broken in two. The pieces were still in place, but
there was no continuity with the element. A new clamp can be fashioned
from soft, and I stress soft, aluminum. In fact, it would be a good idea
to anneal the piece after bending and forming it to the element, and
before final mounting. Think of it as building another Heathkit.
