Cleaning Tubes

Hi All,
Just how do you clean old tubes without removing the lettering?
As you probably have guessed, I have a whole set of tubes from a
boatanchor that I put in a tub and soaked with soap and water and then
dried a complete set of beautifully clean tubes.  Nothing spoils your
view of the insides,  especially not the pesky lettering!
