Cleaning Tubes

What I use is a very slightly damp cloth, water ONLY!
Any type of soap will remove the lettering as well as
glass cleaners like Windex. Very carefuly wipe the
tube surface. Usually, this works fine.

To find out what your tubes are, sometimes you can put
them in the freezer for about an hour. Take them out,
one at a time, and breathe on them. Look fast, the
original lettering might still be legible for a couple
of seconds. This definitely works on tubes that
haven't been cleaned but the lettering has worn off
over the years.

Just how do you clean old tubes without removing the lettering?
