Using SB-220 With Solid State Rigs

Hello,
     I used my SB-220 for years with a Drake C-Line...no problems.  I
recently hooked up a Yaesu FT-990 to the SB-220 amp, and I notice a lot of
"spitting" sounds (arcing, I guess) coming from the amp, even though drive
appears to be at the correct level.  Going back to the C-Line, I don't have
this happen.  Is there something "different" about a solid state driver that
the SB-220 would notice?
