Using SB-220 With Solid State Rigs

A good rule of thumb with a tube amp is if it makes spitting sounds, there
is something either very wrong with the output network or load (open
connection or no load), or something has caused the normally smooth edges of
the plate tuning cap to become damaged (like a recurring arc, the spitting
sound). Another common cause is parasitic oscillation. Rich Measures blames,
among other things, the availability of higher-mu (200 vs 160) 3-500
variants on the market. Eimac reduced mu many years ago and Amperex
allegedly did not. Some of the newer suppliers (Chinese, for example)
supposedly used the Amperex design.
