The best way I know how to soup up a 301 is to add a Timewave 599zx
(microprocessor-controlled audio digital processor) to it. The 301 has
always had good sensitivity. With the 599zx, mine now sounds as good as my
Drake R4C. An additional benefit is that the Timewave allows you to shift
down the way-too-high CW tone that normally comes through the stock 400 Hz
filter.
Next best thing is to add a good preamp (like the Ameco) for even better
sensitivity on 15 and 10 meters.

Has anyone tried the "Soup up the SB301 for $7" mod listed in BAMA (Boat
Anchor Manual Archive)?
It describes changing V1 and V6 to higher gm tubes. I was just wondering if
there is a noticable difference in sensitivity with the new tubes.
Thanks,
