I have information regarding the status of the GC-1000 CPU Adapter board
that I have been working on. Many of you have asked me where we are, so I
thought it would be a good idea to add the status to my web page.
This design uses the Atmel AT90S8515 CMOS CPU to replace the old Mostek
3870 that none of us can get our hands on. This is very much like our
ID-4001 CPU adapter that has become so popular. It incorporates both the
operating code as well as the optional RS-232 code into one chip. This
allows you to remove the old Option chip and as a result, the power supply
runs much, much cooler. In addition, we have added some more features to
the new design. When Heathkit originally designed the GC-1000, WWV did not
broad cast the "year" information. This made it necessary to input the
year using DIP switches. Well today, NIST (the old WWV) has incorporated
the year information into the signal. We are using that data to update the
year as well in the new design. We have also improved the options of the
RS-232 output data to include some diagnostic information such as the AGC
level, oscillator trim value, and some others.
The design is not done, but it's close.
I want to thank all of you for your patience while we have been trying to
finish this project. I think the wait will be certainly worth it.
