Hi Dale,
The RF gain control on the SB 303 varis the rf amplifier gain but won't
change the audio level on  a strong signal till the  agc drops below the
threshold.  The pull out switch was used when receiving RTTY so that you
didn't have to listen to the teletype tones. Once the RTTY signal was tuned
in you pulled out the RF knob then just watched teleprinter print.
