For the amount that this collection would raise ($500,000 or more?)
eBay would probably offer him a special deal like they do for Disney
(see http://www.stores.ebay.com/id=25964062). Ironically, Disney have
such rotten feedback on eBay they have made it private, which is a
giant red flag!
So being able to buy direct from the owner is in itself a great deal,
since I suspect prices will be less than most items would go for at
auction.
