Minimum test and alignment equipment for test bench.....

The problem with the Heath signal generators is that
they don't have accurate attenuators and often radiate
a lot from the case.

Back when radio servicemen were using that kind of
equipment (and there definitely was all sorts of
similar equipment available), they really didn't worry
about things like minimum detectible signal, etc.
Frankly, most "All American 5" and other receivers
actually have pretty lousey sensitivity.

You can get a URM-25, TS-497 (or the civilian
equivalent Measurements Model 80), and other very good
signal generators often for well under $100. I have
had a TS-497 series for well over 30 years. Although
I don't use it that much any more (have 3 service
monitors) I do occasionally use it when I need a lot
of signal!

However, if you can't get anything better, then one of
the old radio serviceman type of generators is
definitely better than nothing.

Perhaps the IX-528x series (ib-5281, ig-5280, ig-5282,
im-5284, ipa-5280-1, it-5283) would be a start? That's
pretty much what most radio repairmen used.
