Final Neutralization in HW-101

As per suggestions and an emailed procedure produced by Heath, I tried
neutralizing the 6146's in my HW-101 refurbishing project with the plate and
screen voltages disconnected.  I could not get any indication on the VTVM
connected to the antenna jack with these wires disconnected.  I then hooked
the plate and screen wires back up and, following the procedure in the
original manual, attempted to perform the neutralization.  It appears to
have worked as per the manual but it sure was a pain in the butt fiddling
with the neutralizing cap. to get the plate current minimum and the RF
output maximum at the same point on the FINAL tune knob.

Question:  Any ideas on why the alternate procedure did not work?
