Shipping a SB-230

The external anode ceramic tubes will take a lot more
punishment than one with a glass envelope. It is
clamped in place to hold it tightly aginst a beryllium
oxide ceramic block that conducts heat from the tube
to the heatsink. A thermal compound is applied between
the tube and the ceramic block. If the tube is
removed I believe you would probably need to replace
the compound. I don't think it is the run of the mill
variety like you use with power transistors. The
manual states that the anode temp of the tube can
reach 400 degrees centigrade! If I were the buyer I
would leave the tube clamped and in its socket.
If the amp is dropped during shipment I believe it
would be damaged and the tube would probably survive.
The biggest enemy of the 8873 is excess grid current.
Go to the amp forum on eHam and look at W8JI's remarks
regarding the SB-230. Pray that you never have to
replace the tube as it will cost more than the amp is
worth.
