VTVM DC Probe

I suspect the new ones are better than the old ones, in which the plastic
may have deteriorated or had contact with slightly conductive substances.
But what I think you should consider is getting a Heath high voltage probe.
There are several on eBay right now (not sold by me!). They are made with a
plastic guard to keep your hand from accidentally slipping off the
probe...the regular DC probe provides no protection. Just use the high
voltage probe down to the lowest level that it can accurately measure. The
manual for the high voltage probe is available in the Heathkit directory on
the BAMA website as 336. As stated there, you can just use the 5 volt range
on the VTVM to measure up to 500 volts, etc. Of course, always start the
VTVM at the highest range and step downward to avoid damage.
