Heathkit HW-16 drift

My Heathkit HW-16 receives great some of the time and output is good at 50w to 65w all the time. I have been enjoying making contacts with it. I have retubed it except for the final output tube. The filter capacitors test okay. I am using a Heathkit HG-10 VFO with it. Replaced a bad VR tube in the VFO yesterday.

It randomly will drift off frequency a bit with the audio gradually increasing to a high pitch then a bunch of garbled distortion before silence, then audio is back to normal for awhile. Anyone had this experience before or know of a cure?
