[heathkit-yahoo] Heath HW-100 Plate Modulation Mod

Well, Doc, you have got a tiger by the tail there. You might consider picking up a DX-100 or a TX-1 (Apache) - I believe both of these have plate modulation and are a comfortable 100W AM rig. Give you one more thing to play around with (although you'll have to use a winch to move the darn things around). Another alternative is buy a linear amplifier so you can use just about any size AM transmitter - hey, more tubes to glow brightly! With a good (operative word 'good') amplifier, you could run 400W or so of AM and that should give you the punch you need.

As a very general rule of thumb, you need a peak power capability of 4x the AM carrier rating. Just FYI.

Happy AM'ing!

Bob,

I am told that due to the nature of the mode and other
factors if I want reliable communications other than very
local (which I do) I need a minimum of 100W for AM - and
high-level plate modulation vs the lower-level alternatives.

Presuming the predicate to be true I really need to sort
out the necessary mods to the HW-100 or some other more
amenable cw/ssb tube transceiver.

At the moment the one component that worries me the most
is the three section air variable tuning cap -- not sure I
can fit a larger one in there!

Thanks! doc
