I purchased Mike's kit and the result was quite satisfactory.

More than likely, if the radio is dead, you may have blown diodes.

Best to check all the voltages and see what is up.

Getting replacement "cans" is not possible. Some people have gutted the old 
cans (not me!) and placed a new cap in the original can and then filled in 
the can with epoxy.Sounds like a messy job -- not sure if the insides are 
toxic. The leads on the cans act as tie points so it is pretty hard to do a 
nice repair job with substitute caps.

The transformer in these beasts are pretty tough so hopefully the 
transformer is not at fault.
